Taxonomy and Ontology

A taxonomy is a mostly hierarchical structured classification system principally associated with Biology since the time of Linnaeus. Whilst ontology is synonymous with taxonomy in the US, generally specialists describe taxonomies as being composed of 'IS-A' or parent-child links, whereas ontologies may include any types of links such as object-instance, part-whole, composed-of etc. In this sense, true ontolgies impose constraints on the their components, and support the derivation of inferences.
